she opens her mouth and

a million sugar streams run

from the sky.  He asks her where

the clouds came from, but she

doesn’t know.  Just like she doesn’t know

why dogs run so fast or why

ice gets so cold.  A hawk from

ages past drops until he

becomes a gummy fruit and

dissolves in a puddle beside the

school.  “If the people knew

candy came this way, we would

have hoards of children

interested in ecology.”
